YOGYAKARTA
The City of Culture, Education, and Innovation
Hello, I am Chal Arif Jales Ngabehi Taftian, born on November 23, 2004, in Yogyakarta, Indonesia. Yogyakarta, often affectionately called Jogja, is a city rich in history, culture, and deeply rooted traditions that continue to thrive amidst modernization. As one of Indonesia’s top tourist destinations, Yogyakarta exudes charm that captivates not only visitors but also inspires those who are fortunate enough to call it home, like myself. This city is more than just a birthplace it is a source of invaluable lessons on how culture and innovation can coexist harmoniously.
Yogyakarta is often called the cultural heart of Java, and that title really fits. Everywhere you go, there’s something that reminds you of its deep traditions. From the majestic Keraton Yogyakarta, or Royal Palace, to the small batik workshops tucked away in quiet alleys, the city has a way of making its history come alive. I’ve always been amazed by how much effort people here put into keeping those traditions alive. Growing up, I’ve seen firsthand how arts like gamelan music, wayang kulit (shadow puppetry), and batik-making are more than just performances or crafts they’re part of daily life. Even as a kid, I could feel how these traditions connect people, not just to each other but also to something bigger, like their heritage and identity.
But Yogyakarta isn’t just about culture; it’s also a city of learning. It’s often called the “City of Students,” and for good reason. With top universities like Gadjah Mada University and Yogyakarta State University, the city is full of young people chasing their dreams. It’s such an inspiring environment to grow up in because everywhere you look, there’s someone learning, creating, or working hard to make a difference. What I love most about Yogyakarta is how it balances tradition and innovation. Over the years, I’ve watched the city evolve, with modern technology blending seamlessly into its timeless charm. Whether it’s smart city initiatives or tech start-ups, there’s always something new happening here, yet the soul of the city the traditions and values never gets lost.
Yogyakarta is surrounded by stunning landscapes, from the iconic Parangtritis Beach to the powerful presence of Mount Merapi. For me, these places are more than just tourist spots they’re reminders of how connected we are to nature. Growing up with these views has taught me to appreciate the balance between human life and the environment. But what truly sets Yogyakarta apart is its people. The warmth and friendliness here are unmatched. People genuinely care for each other, and you can feel it in how they interact. Whether it’s sharing stories over a meal at an angkringan or helping out a neighbor in need, the sense of community is something I’ve always admired.
Being born in such a unique and inspiring city feels like a privilege. It’s given me so many lessons about life, from valuing heritage to embracing change. I hope, in my own way, I can contribute to its growth and keep its spirit alive. Yogyakarta isn’t just where I’m from it’s a part of who I am. Every street, every tradition, and every memory has shaped me into the person I am today. It’s a city that holds a special place in my heart, and no matter where life takes me, I’ll always carry its lessons with me. This city has taught me that you don’t have to choose between holding onto the past and embracing the future. In Yogyakarta, you can have both, and I’m proud to call it my home.
